For the last few days now, I have been using a new micro-blogging service, called Rejaw. Rejaw follows the same format as Twitter, but does a few things both differently and better.
1. On Rejaw, your posts are known as “shouts” and they are unlimited text, where Twitter limits their “tweets” to 140 characters.
2. Rejaw makes having a conversation super simple, and this is by far my favorite part of Rejaw. Conversations get their own permalink, making it easy to follow along in a conversation with anyone that is on Rejaw.
Rejaw is certainly in the early stages of going public, but so far things look pretty sweet. While it does mimick Twitter on most every way, it could possibly become just as big, if not bigger than Twitter. That will be a hard goal to accomplish given Twitter’s success and popularity, but it could happen.
Rejaw is built in Ruby on Rails, just as Twitter is. The question now is can Rejaw overcome the problems that Twitter continues to have with scaling accordingly? Surely, the Rejaw team have covered their bases here and built an application with scaling in mind.
The problem is not the scaling, Rails will scale just fine, regardless of what you have heard or read. If the application is built correctly, and the architecture is done right, Rails will have no problem handling the load of a service like Twitter.
So far, Rejaw is great and they are adding new features almost daily now. They have also released an OS X desktop client as well as a pretty rad API for the service. I will certainly continue to use it over the next few weeks and see how they progress along.
Give Rejaw a try, you might just like it.
